Detection and identification of loline and its analogues in horse urine.

Abstract: Several kinds of loline-type alkaloids, norloline, loline, N-acetylnorloline, N-acetylloline, N-formylnorloline, N-formylloline and N-methylloline were detected in the urine of race-horses. Furthermore, a new compound of the alkaloids, N-senecioylnorloline, was also found and identified. These compounds were mainly identified by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-fourier transform-infrared spectrometry (GC-FT-IR). A certain plant of Gramineae containing four kinds of loline-type alkaloids was found in a bale of hay used for the horse forage. The taxonomic feature of the plant was different from known plants containing loline-type alkaloids. The common fragmentation of loline-type alkaloids under electron ionization was briefly discussed.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research article discusses a study on the identification of various loline-type alkaloids, including a previously unidentified compound, in horse urine and the detection of these compounds in a previously unknown plant from the Gramineae family, found in horse feed.

Detection and Identification of Loline-Type Alkaloids in Horse Urine

  • The study analysed horse urine and detected several loline-type alkaloids. These included norloline, loline, N-acetylnorloline, N-acetylloline, N-formylnorloline, N-formylloline and N-methylloline.
  • In addition to these known compounds, a new loline-type alkaloid – N-senecioylnorloline was also identified. Its identification expands the known spectrum of loline-type alkaloids.
  • The methods used for detection and identification were gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-fourier transform-infrared spectrometry (GC-FT-IR). These techniques are known for their precision and reliability, hence providing credible findings.

Presence of Loline-Type Alkaloids in Horse Forage

  • The research discovered a certain plant from the Gramineae family in a bale of hay used for horse forage. This plant was found to contain four kinds of loline-type alkaloids.
  • The plant’s taxonomic feature was distinct from known plants containing loline-type alkaloids, indicating it as a previously unrecognized source of these substances.

Discussion on Loline-Type Alkaloids Fragmentation

  • Finally, the research also discussed the electron ionization fragmentation of loline-type alkaloids, which are common occurrences during the aspects of compound identification in GC-MS. Knowledge of these processes helps in better understanding and identification of these compounds in the future.
