Diseases of the abdomen.
Abstract: Because the abdomen of the adult horse is too thick to obtain good-quality radiographs, diagnostic ultrasound is a particularly valuable imaging modality in the diagnosis of abdominal disease. The size, shape, position, and texture of the liver, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, gravid uterus, and gut wall can be determined by scanning the abdominal surface. The presence or absence of abdominal fluid can be determined efficiently. Gut motility as well as ileus secondary to peritonitis or obstruction can be assessed. Suspected adhesions of the bowel can often be documented, and primary or secondary neoplastic processes can be identified and biopsied.

The article discusses how diagnostic ultrasound is an important tool for detecting diseases in the horse’s abdomen, providing information on the condition of various organs, fluids, and potentially indicating issues such as obstruction, adhesions or tumors.
Diagnostic Ultrasound in Equine Abdominal Assessment
- The body of the adult horse, particularly the abdomen, is too thick to achieve high-quality results from a radiograph, hence, the study emphasizes the significance of diagnostic ultrasound as an effective imaging technique in revealing abdominal diseases.
- Ultrasound can examine the physical properties of multiple organs such as the liver, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, gravid uterus, and gut wall. These properties include size, shape, structure, and position. Through ultrasound imaging, the researcher can gain detailed insights into the condition of these organs and identify abnormalities that may indicate disease.
Role of Ultrasound in Evaluating Abdominal Fluid and Gut Function
- Additionally, the use of ultrasound can efficiently point out the presence or absence of abdominal fluid. Excess fluid in the abdomen can be an indicator of various health problems, including liver disease, congestive heart failure, or infection. Detecting this helps in diagnosing these conditions at an early stage.
- Ultrasound can also shed light on gut motility and ileus. Ileus refers to a lack of movement in the intestines which can create bowel-content buildup. The article mentions that it is usually a secondary symptom of peritonitis (a severe abdominal inflammation) or obstruction.
Identifying Bowel Adhesions and Neoplasms via Ultrasound
- The research also highlights a key advantage of ultrasound in being able to document suspected bowel adhesions. Adhesions refer to bands of tissue that cause organs to stick together and can lead to chronic pain and potential bowel obstruction. These can often be traced through ultrasound scanning.
- Last but not least, primary or secondary neoplastic processes can also be identified and subsequently biopsied in order to test for the presence of cancerous cells. Neoplastic processes refer to the formation of a neoplasm (new, abnormal growth) which can either be benign or malignant (cancerous).
