Does semen quality change after local treatment of seminal vesiculitis in stallions?

This research article investigates whether localized treatments of seminal vesiculitis in stallions have an effect on semen quality. The researchers concluded that initial treatments improved sperm quality, but these improvements were not sustained one month after therapy.

Objective of the Research

• This study aimed to determine the effect of localized therapy on the semen quality of stallions suffering from seminal vesiculitis. Seminal vesiculitis is an inflammation of the seminal vesicle, a condition that can interfere with fertility and is typically challenging to manage.

Methodology

• The study included five stallions with seminal vesiculitis, each of whom were treated endoscopically for ten consecutive days.
• The researchers accessed the glandular lumen and flushed it with a Ringer Lactate solution before infusing an antibiotic. The type of antibiotic used was determined based on an antibiogram from a bacterial culture that was taken from the seminal vesicles before the study.
• The researchers evaluated several parameters from freshly gathered semen samples including: sperm kinetics, plasma membrane integrity (PMI), leukocyte percentage, colony forming units (CFU), and the nitric oxide (NO) content in seminal plasma.

Results

• One week after treatment, the sperm kinetics and plasma membrane integrity had improved, indicating an improvement in sperm quality.
• However, these improvements were not sustained a month after therapy. Similar to the pre-treatment values, both the percentage of leukocytes and CFU in fresh semen and NO level in seminal plasma had decreased one week after treatment (T1) but were similar between before treatment (T0) and one month after treatment (T2).
• This suggests that the disease may have recurred a month post-therapy, leading to a return in seminal parameters to their pre-treatment state.

Conclusion

• Although localized treatment of seminal vesiculitis in stallions initially led to improved sperm quality, this effect was not long-lasting. A month after treatment, the seminal parameters were similar to the levels measured before treatment, indicating the disease’s recurrent nature.
