Effects of trimethoprim-sulfadiazine on thyroid function of horses.

Abstract: Trimethoprim-sulfadiazine was administered to horses in a randomized, placebo controlled study to determine the effects of potentiated sulfonamides on thyroid function in normal horses. The treatment group included eight horses that received trimethoprim-sulfadiazine mixed with molasses orally at 30 mg/kg once daily for eight weeks. The control group included 8 horses that received an oral placebo (flour mixed with molasses) once daily for the same period. Thyroid function was evaluated prior to initiation of treatment and after 8 weeks of treatment. Serum concentrations of total and free triiodothyronine (T3), total and free thyroxine (T4), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were determined at rest and after a thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation test. There was no detectable difference between treatment and control groups.

The research paper investigates the impact of administering the drug trimethoprim-sulfadiazine to horses, with a focus on its potential effects on the thyroid function. It was carried out through a randomized, placebo-controlled study and found that there was no noticeable variation between the treatment and control groups.

Study Design

  • The researchers used a randomized, placebo controlled study design to ensure unbiased results.
  • They tested a total of 16 horses, eight of which (constituting the treatment group) received trimethoprim-sulfadiazine mixed with molasses. This was administered orally at 30 mg/kg once daily for a span of eight weeks.
  • The other eight horses (the control group), were given an oral placebo (flour mixed with molasses), also once daily for the same period.

Assessment of Thyroid Function

  • For a comprehensive evaluation of thyroid function, assessments were done both prior to the beginning of treatment and after the treatment period of 8 weeks.
  • Different parameters were looked at including the serum concentrations of total and free triiodothyronine (T3), total and free thyroxine (T4), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).
  • In addition to the resting measurements, the researchers also subjected the horses to a thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation test to observe for any potential changes.

Findings of the Study

  • Despite the administration of trimethoprim-sulfadiazine to one group of horses, there was no detectable difference between the treatment and control groups.
  • This suggests that the dispensed drug had no significant effects on the horses’ thyroid function, affirming its safety in relation to thyroid health when prescribed for horses.
