Elo Method and Race Traits: A New Integrated System for Sport Horse Genetic Evaluation.
Abstract: This first survey on Sardinian Anglo-Arab horse (SAA) race traits highlights important aspects for the breeding purpose of this population. The heritability of the race traits were estimated through a trivariate model; the estimates were 0.39, 0.33, and 0.30 for the number of placings, total earnings and Elo rating, respectively. The genetic progress could be improved by using an MT genetic evaluation of stallions and mares, combining information from competition traits.

This research studies the race traits of the Sardinian Anglo-Arab horse, and highlights important elements for their breeding purpose. The study estimates the heritability of the race traits, providing values for the number of placings, total earnings and Elo rating. The study suggests the potential for improved genetic progress through multivariate trait genetic evaluation of stallions and mares, combining information from competition traits.
Overview of the Research
- The research is a first study of its kind on the Sardinian Anglo-Arab horse (SAA), a breed renowned for its racing characteristics. It serves to understand the key genetic components that contribute to their performance.
- The main objective of the research was to examine the race traits of the SAA and how these could be quantified to improve breeding programs.
Methodology
- The study uses a trivariate model to estimate the heritability of specific race traits. These traits included the number of placings, total earnings and Elo rating, which is a rating system originally developed for chess but adapted to evaluate horse racing ability.
- Data was compiled for each trait and subsequently analyzed to produce numerical estimates.
Findings
- The results of the analysis provided estimates for the number of placings (0.39), total earnings (0.33), and Elo rating (0.30). These figures quantify the heritability of each race trait.
- These figures imply that each trait has moderate heritability, meaning that they are somewhat influenced by genetic factors.
Recommendations
- The study concludes that there may be potential to improve the genetic progress of this horse breed through multivariate trait genetic evaluation of stallions and mares. This involves combining information from various competition traits rather than assessing them in isolation.
- This may potentially lead to more comprehensive breeding programs, improving the overall performance of the Sardinian Anglo-Arab horse.
