[Endangered domestic animal breeds in German-speaking countries. V. Horses].

Abstract: Due to motorization the heavy horses, in particular draught horses and carriage horses, were deprived of their "raison d'être". At present therefore, they mostly are found in small livestocks. The past few years they regained some significance through their work in the forests, as an attraction in tourism or somewhere else. In German speaking countries approximately 15 horse breeds must be considered to be threatened in their existence. Breeding history, appearance, use and geographical distribution of 12 of them are discussed in this article.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research paper details the threat to various horse breeds in German-speaking countries and their changing significance through history, particularly focusing on 12 such breeds, discussing their breeding history, appearance, use and geographical distribution.

About the Research

  • The research focuses on endangered domestic horse breeds in German-speaking nations. The prime reason for their endangerment has been motorization which has rendered many heavy horse breeds like draught horses and carriage horses obsolete.
  • These heavy horses, once deprived of their primary purpose, are now majorly kept in small livestock groups. In recent years, however, they’ve regained a bit of their former standing, finding use in forest work, as tourist attractions, and other areas.

Main Findings

  • The researchers identify approximately 15 horse breeds that are considered endangered in German-speaking countries.
  • The paper presents a detailed discussion about 12 of these breeds. Each breed is analyzed in terms of its breeding history (how the breed was developed and for what purposes), appearance (distinct physical attributes that set the breed apart), how they have been mainly used in the past and now, and their geographical distribution (where they are located).
  • The paper, therefore, provides a comprehensive understanding of the situation of these endangered horse breeds in German-speaking countries, providing much-needed attention to their preservation.

Significance of the Research

  • This research serves a vital role in creating awareness about the fragility and significance of these endangered horse breeds, which may further contribute to their protection and preservation.
  • The detailed account and understanding of the breeding history, appearance, use, and geographical distribution of these endangered breeds can provide valuable insights to conservationists, breeders, and researchers interested in the field.
