Equine herpesvirus 1-associated ulcerative dermatitis in a horse.
Abstract: This case report describes the clinical and histopathological findings of an infection caused by equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in a horse showing respiratory signs and a papular, crusted and ulcerative dermatitis involving mucosae. This diagnosis was supported by real-time PCR positive for EHV-1 on nasal swabs and tissues. The study is about a horse diagnosed with an infection from equine herpesvirus-1, which presented in symptoms of respiratory distress and a papular, crusted and ulcerative dermatitis affecting the mucosae. Diagnosis was confirmed with real-time PCR tests on nasal swabs and tissues.
Study Background
- The research subject involved a horse showing signs of respiratory distress and a type of skin inflammation indicative of ulcerative dermatitis that was affecting the mucus membranes.
- The equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) is a highly infectious pathogen in horses that typically affects the respiratory system, but can also cause neurological disease and abortion.
Method of Research
- The investigators used real-time PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) tests to diagnose the disease. This is a highly sensitive and accurate testing method that can quickly amplify the DNA of a specific virus, in this case, EHV-1, allowing for rapid detection and diagnosis.
- The researchers performed these tests on nasal swabs and tissue samples taken from the affected horse.
Research Findings
- The real-time PCR tests returned positive for the presence of EHV-1 in both the nasal swabs and the tissue samples, confirming that the horse was indeed infected with this virus.
- This case was particularly notable for the occurrence of papular, crusted, and ulcerative dermatitis involving the mucus membranes, a symptom often not associated with EHV-1 infection.
Impact of the Study
- This case study broadens the known symptomatology of EHV-1 in horses, indicating that the disease can present as a skin infection in addition to its customary respiratory presentation.
- The findings could promote a better understanding of EHV-1 pathogenesis and might help in the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
