Equine Milk Production and Valorization of Marginal Areas-A Review.

Abstract: The equine dairy chain is renewing the interest toward horse and donkey breeding for the production of milk with potential health promoting properties. The dairy equine chain for human consumption could contribute to the rural eco-sustainable development for the micro-economies of those areas threatened by marginalization. As a part of the whole equine industry, and its possible impact in the modern and future society, the main traits of the equine dairy enterprise are reviewed with a special focus on management of animals and milk. Equine milk compositional and nutritional peculiarities are described as also related to milk hygiene and health issues. Scientific and technical aspects of the feeding management are considered in the frame of the emerging dairy equine enterprise, where pasture is an essential element that allows to match production goals for horses and donkeys, biodiversity preservation, as well as landscape safeguard.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

This study explores the potential of horse and donkey dairy production as an avenue for sustainable rural development, particularly in regions prone to marginalization. It examines the various aspects of the equine dairy industry, including milk composition, nutrition, hygiene, animal management, and how feeding practices relate to this emerging enterprise.

Overview of the Equine Dairy Chain

  • This study focuses on the dairy equine chain, which is the process of breeding horses and donkeys for milk production. This process has potential health benefits and is gaining attention.
  • The dairy equine chain can provide economic benefits to rural areas, especially those at risk of marginalization. Marginalization is a process where certain groups are pushed to the edges of society, making it harder for them to participate in social, economic, and political life.
  • The equine dairy industry could be a key player in creating sustainable development in these rural areas.

Composition and Nutrition of Equine Milk

  • The authors examine the unique composition and nutritional properties of equine milk. This milk has specific health benefits, though the authors do not detail what these health benefits are.
  • The study also touches on issues relating to milk hygiene and health. This suggests that there are standards and precautions that must be maintained to ensure that equine milk remains safe for human consumption.

Feeding Management and Biodiversity Preservation

  • The research highlights the importance of scientific and technical aspects of feeding management within the dairy equine enterprise. The aim here is to balance production goals with biodiversity preservation and landscape protection, indicating that sustainable methods are key.
  • The role of pasture is emphasized in equine dairy farming. It not only serves as a food source but also contributes to preserving biodiversity and safeguarding landscapes.

Looking Towards the Future

  • Overall, this study points to the dairy equine enterprise as an emerging industry with significant potential for rural development and sustainability.
  • The research underlines the need for comprehensive management strategies, from feeding to product delivery, to ensure this enterprise’s success in modern society.
