Evaluation of intravenous regional perfusion with amphotericin B and dimethylsulfoxide to treat horses for pythiosis of a limb.
Abstract: Treatment for horses with pythiosis of a limb is challenging. This study aims to evaluate the effects of administering amphotericin B in a 10 % solution of dimethylsulfoxide by intravenous regional limb perfusion (IRLP) to treat horses for cutaneous pythiosis of a limb. Results: All 15 of the horses treated had complete resolutions of their lesion between 6 to 9 weeks after a single IRLP treatment. No complications were observed at the site of venipuncture for IRLP. Before initiation of treatment, there was anemia and marked leucocytosis which resolved following treatment. Serum biochemistry showed no significant changes. Conclusions: IRLP administration of amphotericin B in a 10 % DMSO solution was easily performed, relatively inexpensive and an effective treatment for treating horses for pythiosis of a limb and resolved the infection with no complications.

The study investigates the efficacy of a specific treatment for horses with pythiosis of a limb, where they were given a medication called amphotericin B using a technique called intravenous regional limb perfusion (IRLP). The treatment was found to be effective, with all horses recovering after a single session of the treatment, without any complications or significant side effects.
Background
- The research focuses on a condition in horses called pythiosis of a limb. This is a challenging and problematic condition to treat.
- The study evaluates the implementation of a treatment using a drug named amphotericin B mixed in a solution of 10 percent dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO).
- This mix is administered using a procedure termed intravenous regional limb perfusion (IRLP).
Results
- All 15 horses treated under the study exhibited complete resolution of their lesion between 6 to 9 weeks post the single IRLP treatment.
- There were no complications noticed at the site of venipuncture for IRLP. Venipuncture refers to the process of drawing blood or gaining access to the horse’s vein for the procedure.
- Before the treatment initiation, the horses showed anemia and marked leucocytosis, conditions that resolved after the treatment. Anemia is a decrease in red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood, and leucocytosis is an increase in the white blood cell count.
- Serum biochemistry showed no significant changes, indicating there were no substantial alterations in the horses’ internal body conditions.
Conclusions
- The research concludes that IRLP administration of amphotericin B in a 10 percent DMSO solution was an effective treatment for pythiosis of a limb in horses.
- The treatment technique was relatively inexpensive and was easily performed.
- The IRLP treatment not only resolved the infection but also did so with no complications, making it a promising solution for managing pythiosis of a limb in horses.
