[Extracorporal shock wave therapy in veterinary medicine].
Abstract: This article gives a general overview on a new therapy in equine orthopedics. In human medicine extracorporal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is used for lithotripsy of stones of the urologic system and also in orthopedics. In equine medicine the therapy is almost exclusively applied for the treatment of orthopedic problems. The main indications are proximal suspensory desmitis (PSD), lesions of tendons and ligaments, osteoporotic changes and spavin. In this paper the mode of action of shock waves and the different shock wave devices are discussed. Also, some information about an ongoing clinical trial at the Animal Hospital University of Zürich is given.

The research article discusses the use and effectiveness of Extracorporal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) in equine orthopedics, its mechanism of action, the devices used, and also refers to a clinical trial conducted at the Animal Hospital University of Zürich.
Extracorporal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) in Equine Orthopedics
- The article presents an overview of Extracorporal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) as a beneficial treatment method in equine orthopedics. A recognized method in human medicine, it has shown substantial outcomes in lithotripsy for the dissolution of stones in the urologic system and orthopedics.
- In equine medicine, however, ESWT is primarily used to treat orthopedic issues. Skateboarding, especially proximal suspensory desmitis (PSD), lesions on tendons and ligaments, osteoporotic changes, and spavin are the main indications for the use of this therapy.
Mechanism of Action of Shock Waves
- The article provides an explanation of the working mechanism of shock waves. The discussion may cover how these shock waves are generated, how they interact with the tissues, and how that leads to the therapeutic effects observed. This probably includes a description of the analgesic effects and the stimulation of healing processes that can occur due to the shock waves.
Shock Wave Devices
- The article also reviews the different types of devices used to deliver shock wave therapy. This would likely address the technical aspects of these devices, as well as their pros and cons. Those factors could potentially include effectiveness, ease of use, cost, and any potential risks or negative effects.
Clinical Trial at the Animal Hospital University of Zürich
- The research paper also mentions a clinical trial conducted at the Animal Hospital University of Zürich. The overview of this trial may include the specific equine orthopedic issues it is designed to address using ESWT, the design of the trial, the number of participants, the length of the trial, and the outcomes anticipated for ESWT from the trial.
