[Focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy in an isolated calcification in the equine ligamentum nuchae–case report].

Abstract: In recent years extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is used in veterinary medicine especially in equine orthopedics. Different ESWT generators are commonly used in equine medicine with varying energy density and depth of penetration. The presented case report described the treatment of a ligamentum nuchae calcification with focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy with SONOCUR Plus generator combined with SONOLINE Prima ultrasound. Negligible adverse effects, the non-invasive character of the treatment, the time-saving therapy, and the positive results make the focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy to an useful application.

This research article explores the use of focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in treating calcification in the ligamentum nuchae of horses. It demonstrates the effectiveness of this non-invasive treatment, highlighting its negligible negative effects and positive outcomes.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)

  • This research is focused on the application of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) in veterinary medicine, particularly in treating orthopedic issues in horses. ESWT works by delivering shockwaves into the body from outside. It is a non-invasive therapy widely used in horse medicine.
  • Different ESWT generators with varying energy density and penetration levels are commonly used. In this study, the researchers specifically used the SONOCUR Plus generator combined with SONOLINE Prima ultrasound.

Treatment of Calcification

  • The study illustrates a case where a horse’s ligamentum nuchae calcification was successfully treated using focused ESWT. Ligamentum nuchae is a crucial ligament in a horse’s neck, and its calcification can lead to serious health and movement issues.
  • The use of the advanced SONOCUR Plus generator and SONOLINE Prima ultrasound in ESWT allowed for the precise targeting of the calcification location and effectively treated it without causing significant side effects.

Benefits of Focused ESWT

  • One of the main advantages of ESWT, as highlighted in this research, is its non-invasive nature. This means that it doesn’t require any surgical procedures and thus reduces the risk associated with invasive methods.
  • Additionally, this particular treatment was found to be time-saving, making it an ideal option in scenarios where quick remedial action is needed.
  • This study also reported negligible adverse effects in the case of the treated horse, which makes this therapy a suitable choice as it minimizes the risk of potential complications post-treatment.
  • The positive results documented in the case study suggest that ESWT is a valuable tool in veterinary medicine, and particularly in the treatment of equine orthopedic issues.
