[Hematology and cytodiagnosis of leukosis of the horse (review)].
Abstract: In a review supplementary to prior evaluations further hematological or cytodiagnostic aspects respectively of equine leucosis are discussed. Leukemic nature of the disease is characterized by increased count of normal blood cells or by the presence of morphologically non-differentiated cells in circulating blood or by disorder or loss of function of blood cells respectively. Thrombocytopenia in the most cases is accompanied by anemia, leukemia and tumor cell infiltration in bone marrow. Tumor cells in circulating blood indicate their presence in bone marrow too. In cases of equine leucosis with effusions in thoracic and/or in abdominal cavities tumor cells seem to be present more frequently in hydrothorax than in ascites.

This research paper reviews supplementary studies on hematological aspects of equine leucosis, a type of leukemia in horses. The paper further discusses the leukemic nature of the disease, marked by increased or abnormal blood cells, disorders or loss of function of these cells, and common symptoms such as thrombocytopenia, anemia and tumor infiltration in the bone marrow.
Hematological Aspects of Equine Leucosis
- The review examines the leukemic nature of equine leucosis. This disease is characterized by increased count of normal blood cells, the presence of morphologically non-differentiated cells in circulating blood, and change or loss of function of blood cells.
- The abnormal count and properties of blood cells signify the leukemic nature of the disease. Morphologically non-differentiated cells in blood circulation imply that the DNA inside these cells is not behaving normally and carrying out its usual tasks of controlling cell growth and division.
Symptoms and Indicators of Equine Leucosis
- The primary symptoms of equine leucosis, as per the research, include thrombocytopenia (a condition characterised by low platelet count), anemia (a condition marked by a deficiency of red cells or of hemoglobin in the blood), and potentially tumor cell infiltration in bone marrow.
- The presence of tumor cells in the blood suggests their existence in bone marrow as well. The bone marrow is a soft, spongy tissue inside the bones that produces blood cells. If leukemic cells have infiltrated it, this could disrupt the normal production of blood cells.
Presence of Tumor Cells in Body Cavities
- The study further indicates that in cases of equine leucosis with effusions (an outpouring of fluid) in the thoracic and/or abdominal cavities, tumor cells seem to be present more frequently in hydrothorax (a condition that causes fluid to collect in the chest) than in ascites (abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen).
- This increased presence of tumor cells in hydrothorax implies a possible metastasis or spread of the leukemic cells from the blood into these body cavities, which can complicate disease progression and treatment.
