Histamine levels in the blood of pregnant mares.
Abstract: The problem of histamine metabolism has long been the subject of research. The excretion of histamine during pregnancy has been studied in cats, mice, hamsters, and many other animals, and also in human beings. However, few papers have been published on the levels of histamine in the blood of pregnant animals. In this paper the variation in blood histamine levels in pregnant mares from the first month of pregnancy until term is reported.

The research article focuses on studying the variations in histamine levels in the blood of pregnant mares, from the early stages of the pregnancy till the end of the term.
Historical Context
- The paper acknowledges long-standing interest in histamine metabolism, a topic that has been previously studied in a variety of animal species including cats, mice, hamsters, and also humans.
- Despite the extensive research in other categories, there is a lack of published work specifically investigating histamine levels in the blood of pregnant animals, making this research somewhat unique.
Objective and Significance
- The research aims to fill a knowledge gap about blood histamine levels in pregnant animals, specifically focusing on mares, or female horses.
- Understanding variations in blood histamine levels during pregnancy could contribute to our understanding of pregnancy-related changes in horses. This could potentially have implications for veterinary care of pregnant mares.
Methodology
- The study appears to have been conducted longitudinally, tracking changes in blood histamine levels from the first month of pregnancy until term, although the specific methods employed are not described in the abstract.
Histamine and Pregnancy
- Histamine, a compound involved in local immune responses as well as regulating physiological function in the gut and acting as a neurotransmitter, may have varied levels during different stages of pregnancy, which this study aimed to investigate in mares.
