Human-horse interactions as complementary strategies for mental health promotion.

Abstract: Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) represent complementary rehabilitative approaches designed to address a range of physical and mental health conditions. Among these, Equine-assisted interventions (EAI) offer structured opportunities for engagement through diverse activities conducted within naturalistic settings, thereby integrating therapeutic processes with ecological contexts. Methods: Over the past years, our group has developed and implemented standardized AAI methodologies that are now embedded within comprehensive intervention planning. This overview summarizes the application of different rehabilitative programs based on EAI. Results: Our findings suggest that EAI can be effectively implemented across a heterogeneous spectrum of psychiatric disorders, contributing to recovery processes and social integration across the lifespan, from childhood to old age. Conclusions: EAI represent innovative, ecologically grounded interventions with promising clinical potential. Further research involving larger, well-characterized samples is warranted to strengthen the evidence base and to expand the applicability of these promising complementary interventions.

Overview

  • This research article explores equine-assisted interventions (EAI), a type of animal-assisted intervention (AAI), as complementary strategies for promoting mental health and supporting rehabilitation across various psychiatric disorders and age groups.

Introduction to Animal-Assisted and Equine-Assisted Interventions

  • Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) use animals as part of therapeutic approaches aimed at improving physical and mental health.
  • Equine-assisted interventions (EAI) specifically involve horses and incorporate activities that engage participants in natural outdoor settings.
  • These interventions blend therapeutic processes with ecological contexts to potentially enhance the healing experience.

Methodology

  • The researchers’ group has developed standardized methodologies for implementing AAI, particularly focusing on EAI.
  • These methodologies are integrated into comprehensive intervention plans, ensuring structured and consistent application.
  • The overview in the article summarizes various rehabilitative programs that utilize EAI.

Findings and Results

  • EAI has been effectively applied to a wide range of psychiatric disorders.
  • The interventions support recovery processes and enhance social integration, benefiting individuals across the lifespan from childhood to elderly adulthood.
  • These findings underline the versatility and potential of EAI as a complementary tool in mental health care.

Conclusions and Future Directions

  • EAI represents a promising and innovative intervention approach grounded in ecological settings.
  • The clinical potential of EAI is encouraging but requires further validation through research involving larger and well-characterized participant samples.
  • Expanding research would help solidify the evidence base and permit broader application of these interventions.

Summary

  • This article emphasizes that engaging with horses through structured activities can serve as an effective complementary strategy to traditional mental health treatments.
  • The integration of natural settings and animal interaction provides unique benefits that aid in mental health recovery and social connectedness.
  • Overall, EAI offers an ecologically grounded and innovative pathway for enhancing mental wellness across diverse populations.
