Internal fixation of fractured ribs in neonatal foals with nylon cable tie using a modified technique.
Abstract: Nylon cable tie has been shown to be an effective and economical method for fixing fractured ribs in the neonatal foal. This article describes a modification of the previously described technique. Under general anesthesia, the fractured ribs were exposed and a hole was drilled in the dorsal and ventral fragments. The fracture was not reduced, leaving the fragments overriding each other. The nylon cable tie was passed through the hole in the dorsal fragment from the external surface of the rib. The free end of the cable tie was then passed through the hole in the ventral fragment from the external surface of the rib and the tie was tightened. This technique was used in 4 neonatal foals with no complications. The modification of the original technique represents a method to minimize soft tissue trauma, implant failure, and complications.

The research discusses an improved method of fixing rib fractures in neonatal foals using nylon cable ties, aimed at reducing trauma and potential complications.
Research Context
- The study focuses on the development of an improved, economical method to repair fractured ribs in newborn horses. Previously, nylon cable ties have been used effectively for this purpose. However, the researchers introduced modifications to the original technique to further minimize trauma and complications.
Research Methodology
- The experimental subjects of this study were neonatal foals suffering from fractured ribs. The number of participants was limited to four animals.
- Under general anesthesia, an incision was made vertically to expose the broken ribs. Drilling holes in the dorsal and ventral fragments of the fractured ribs, approximately 5 to 10mm from the fracture line, prepared the ribs for fixation.
- The nylon cable tie was introduced through the hole in the dorsal fragment, followed by the ventral one. The tie was then tightened to secure the fragments.
- It is important to note that the fractures were not reduced, which means the broken fragments were left overlapping each other.
Research Findings and Conclusion
- The modified method appears to be an effective way of handling fractured ribs in newborn foals. With this approach, the researchers did not encounter any complications in the four cases under study.
- Considering the effectiveness of the method, it could signify a cost-efficient, less harmful solution to manage fractures. Further studies with a larger sample size would be necessary to validate these findings.
