Internal fixation of fractures of the third phalanx in three horses.
Abstract: The technique of internal fixation of intra-articular fractures of the third phalanx using lag screw interfragmentary compression is described. Three cases are discussed and the successful treatment of infection and osteomyelitis described in one of them. Despite this potential complication internal fixation offers a better prognosis and also a more rapid return to work than non-operative treatments.

The research article presents a technique for fixing intra-articular fractures in horses’ third phalanx using lag screw interfragmentary compression. The study discusses three cases, one of which involved successful treatment of infection and osteomyelitis, and suggests that this surgical process promises a better prognosis and quicker return to work than non-operative approaches.
Researchers’ Approach and Methodology
- The researchers focused on internal fixation of fractures, specifically within the third phalanx of horses. This type of fracture occurs within the joints and can have significant consequences for a horse’s mobility and even its life if not treated effectively.
- The method of treatment studied involves using a surgical procedure known as lag screw interfragmentary compression. This procedure aims to stabilize the fracture and promote healing by using screws to compress the fracture fragments together, making it an ‘internal fixation’ procedure as the hardware remains inside the body after surgery.
- The study evidences its findings through three case studies, which aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of this surgical approach in real-world settings.
Outcomes and Findings
- While using internal fixation using lag screw interfragmentary compression, the process demonstrated effectiveness in the successful treatment of fractures within the third phalanx.
- One of the cases showed a successful resolution of infection and osteomyelitis, a severe infection that affects the bone or bone marrow. This insinuates the potential for this treatment to manage complications resulting from fractures and surgical interventions.
- The technique was further recognized for providing better prognosis and enabling a fast return to work – indicating fewer post-operative complications and shorter recovery periods than non-surgical treatments.
Implications and Significance
- The study suggests that internal fixation using lag screw interfragmentary compression holds promise for enhancing the treatment of intra-articular fractures of the third phalanx in horses.
- The evidence concerning the success of this method indicates it may be a reliable surgical approach, reducing recovery time and improving the overall prognosis compared to non-operative treatments.
- The successful treatment of complications like infection and osteomyelitis further highlight the potential benefits of this method, suggesting it may be versatile in handling various complications associated with such fractures.
