Investigative and Diagnostic Toxicology and Feed-Related Outbreaks.
Abstract: Incidences of feed contamination are rare even though enormous amounts of animal feed are manufactured. However, there are still some cases of feed-related illness in horses. Veterinarians play a crucial role in recognizing and mitigating these events and in assessing the severity of risks. Due to these risks, proper reporting and consultation with government and state agencies are crucial. Accurate diagnosis and identification of the source of poisoning are promising when a thorough case workup is performed and agencies such as veterinary diagnostic laboratories and the US Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine are used effectively.

This research paper discusses the importance of accurate diagnosis and reporting in cases of feed-related illnesses in horses, emphasizing the role of veterinarians and collaboration with regulatory agencies.
Role of Veterinarians in Feed-related Illnesses
- In this study, the authors emphasize the role of veterinarians in recognizing and mitigating incidences of feed-related illnesses in horses. These incidences, though rare considering the vast amounts of animal feed produced, can significantly impact the health of horses.
- Veterinarians have the onus of assessing the severity of risks associated with these cases. Their understanding of the clinical signs, possible contaminants, and the horse’s exposure history play a crucial role in disease diagnosis and treatment.
Significance of Reporting and Consultation
- The paper highlights the importance of reporting incidences accurately and swiftly. This not only aids in timely intervention for the affected horses but also helps track the source and prevent widespread contamination.
- Further, authors suggest that veterinarians, while dealing with these cases, must consult with government and state agencies for informed diagnosis and effective management of feed-related outbreaks.
Case Diagnosis and Involvement of Regulatory Agencies
- The study suggests that an accurate diagnosis and identification of the source of poisoning become possible through a comprehensive case workup. Here, systematic history taking, clinical examination, laboratory testing, and necropsy, if necessary, form part of the investigative procedure.
- Veterinary diagnostic laboratories and the US Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine are important agencies that assist in this process. Their involvement ensures effective analysis of any potential contaminant and helps establish the link between the suspect feed and the illness.
