Iohexol myelography in the horse.
Abstract: Iohexol, a water soluble non-ionic contrast agent, was evaluated for myelography in the horse. Both 300 and 350 mg iodine/ml iohexol gave diagnostic cervical myelograms. Pathological changes were limited to extradural oedema and an increase in the number of white blood cells and specific gravity in the cerebrospinal fluid two days after myelography. This increase in white blood cells in the cerebrospinal fluid was, however, much less than that recorded by other authors using metrizamide and iopamidol contrast media. These findings indicate that iohexol is a less irritant myelographic contrast agent than those previously evaluated in the horse.

The research study evaluates the effectiveness of a water-soluble contrast agent called Iohexol for diagnosing spinal conditions in horses through myelography, a type of imaging test. The study finds Iohexol results in fewer side effects, especially irritation, compared to previous contrast agents used.
Objective of the Study
- The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness and potential side effects of Iohexol, a water-soluble non-ionic contrast agent, in myelography for horses.
Experimentation Process and Findings
- Two concentrations of Iohexol, 300 and 350 mg iodine/ml, were used to perform cervical myelograms in horses, achieving successful results.
- Two days after the procedure, certain minor pathological changes were observed. These included extradural edema (swelling in the area outside the dura mater, the outermost layer of the brain and spinal cord) and an increase in the number of white blood cells and specific gravity in the cerebrospinal fluid, indicating some level of response from the body’s immune system.
Comparison to Other Contrast Agents
- In comparison to other contrast agents, such as metrizamide and iopamidol, the use of Iohexol resulted in a lesser increase in white blood cells in the cerebrospinal fluid, suggesting a lower level of irritation caused by the procedure.
- This comparative result indicates that Iohexol may pose fewer risks and side effects than other contrast agents previously used in horse myelography.
Conclusion
- Based on the findings from this study, the researchers conclude that Iohexol is a safer and less irritant myelographic contrast agent than those previously evaluated in horses.
