Magnetic resonance imaging features of serous atrophy of bone marrow fat in the distal limb of three horses.

• Additionally, an increase in signal intensity was observed on short tau inversion recovery (STIR) images. This radiological approach combined with T1-weighted imaging allowed for the bone abnormalities in emaciated horses to be efficiently detected.
• These MRI images were taken in the absence of lameness, meaning there was no physical deformity or disability interfering with the horse’s natural mobility.
• The horses being studied exhibited these abnormal MR manifestations in all areas of trabecular bone (spongy bone) located in the distal (lower) limbs.
• In two out of the three examined horses, microscopic evaluation confirmed the presence of serous atrophy. This provided additional evidence supporting the findings of the MRI examination.
