Maintenance of fertility in the horse including artificial insemination.
Abstract: A high fertility rate depends on many different factors and is always related to inheritance and enviorment. The successful feritly control system in the German Thoroughbred breeding industry shows that fertility can be increased by good management and veterinary supervision. The insemination of horses with frozen semen is discussed. Replacement of natural service by A.I. with frozen semen is not generally accepted in horsebreeding, as the conditions are entirely different from cattle breeding. However, there are several ways in which A.I. can be assistance in stud management.

This research article explores the role of good management and veterinary supervision in maintaining and increasing fertility in horses, with a specific focus on artificial insemination using frozen semen.
Overview of Artificial Insemination and Horse Fertility
- The study explains that high fertility in horses doesn’t happen in isolation but depends on several factors, including genetic inheritance and environmental conditions.
- The authors illustrate this by pointing to the German Thoroughbred breeding industry where a successful fertility control system buoyed by effective management and veterinary oversight resulted in improved fertility rates.
- They highlight the importance of careful managerial decisions and professional veterinary involvement in fertility control and maintenance as key ingredients for such successes.
Artificial Insemination with Frozen Semen
- The researchers delve into the use of artificial insemination (AI) in horses, specifically using frozen semen. This technique involves storing horse semen at extremely low temperatures to maintain viability before using it for insemination.
- However, they point out that the use of AI with frozen semen hasn’t received widespread acceptance in the horse breeding industry as it has in cattle. The authors argue that the conditions and variables in horse breeding differ significantly from those in cattle.
- Despite this, the researchers acknowledge that artificial insemination has its merits and can play a vital role in stud management.
Potential of Artificial Insemination in Stud Management
- While the researchers don’t provide a detailed outline of how AI can enhance stud management, they imply that it could overlay a controlled, precise, and predictable process in horse breeding.
- It could, for instance, aid in genetically selecting desirable traits, overcoming physical barriers such as distance or mismating, and preventing sexually transmitted diseases.
