Mammary adenocarcinoma in four mares.
Abstract: Mammary gland adenocarcinoma in 4 horses was characterized by firm swelling of the gland and serosanguineous discharge from the teat orifice. Two of the mares had ulcerative lesions of the mammary gland. Palpation of the affected gland typically elicited signs of pain. Diagnosis was assisted by cytologic evaluation of the fluid discharge, but definitive diagnosis was based on histologic examination. Treatment included mastectomy and lymphadenectomy.

This research investigates four cases of mammary gland adenocarcinoma in horses. The main findings of the research include the clinical symptoms and the methods used for diagnosis and treatment of the condition.
Clinical Symptoms
- The research identifies that adenocarcinoma in the mammary gland of horses is associated with a firm swelling of the gland. This results in a noticeable alteration in the appearance of the mammary gland area.
- In addition, there is a serosanguineous (bloody-serum) discharge from the teat orifice, showing a combination of blood and serum. This is an indicator of an ongoing inflammatory process.
- The research also shows that two of the four horses had ulcerative lesions in the mammary gland. This refers to open, painful wounds in the gland.
- Palpation (checking by touch) of the affected gland causes pain, indicating the presence of some form of disease or abnormality within the gland.
Diagnosis
- As part of the diagnosis, a cytologic evaluation of the fluid discharged from the gland was carried out. Cytologic examination involved analyzing the types and numbers of cells present in the discharge. This helped to confirm the presence of an abnormal condition, but was not sufficient to provide a definitive diagnosis.
- For a definitive diagnosis, the researchers relied on histologic examinations. This involves the microscopic examination of tissue in order to study the manifestations of disease. Here, tissue samples from the affected mammary glands were examined under a microscope to definitively diagnose adenocarcinoma.
Treatment
- The treatment for the mares with mammary gland adenocarcinoma involved surgical procedures. Specifically, mastectomy, which refers to the surgical removal of one or both mammary glands was conducted.
- In addition to mastectomy, lymphadenectomy – the surgical removal of one or more groups of lymph nodes – was also carried out. It is assumed here that the lymph nodes were likely involved or at risk of being invaded by the cancer.
