Outbreak of dermatophilosis in a horse herd in israel.
Abstract: A retrospective study of an outbreak of dermatophilosis in a herd of 18 adult horses and 13 foals, in Israel, is presented. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time such an outbreak has been reported from a country in the Mediterranean climatic zone. This outbreak might be associated with exposure of the horses to water and humidity as a result of excessive rainfall in November 1994, as well as intensive washing of the horses and a long period spent by the animals in a marshy manege.

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.
The study looks at a past outbreak of skin disease dermatophilosis in a horse herd in Israel, suggesting that wet conditions due to high rainfall might have led to the rare occurrence of the disease in this Mediterranean climatic zone.
Research Overview
- The research focuses on an outbreak of dermatophilosis, a bacterial skin ailment in a horse herd in Israel.
- The study was retrospective, meaning the researchers looked back at the historical occurrence of the outbreak for their investigation.
Significance of the Study
- The outbreak of dermatophilosis in Israel is significant because it’s the first of its kind reported in a country within the Mediterranean climatic zone.
- Typically, dermatophilosis affects animals in more tropical climates where high rainfall and humidity are common.
Possible Causes of the Outbreak
- The study suggests that the unexpected outbreak might have been influenced by abnormal weather conditions and human activities.
- Increased rainfall in November 1994 resulted in exposure of the horses to excessive water and humidity, conditions which are conducive to the spread of the dermatophilosis bacterium.
- The practice of intensive washing of the horses and keeping them in a marshy manege for extended periods could also have contributed to the outbreak.
Implications of the Study
- The findings of this study point to the need for careful maintenance of horse hygiene and living conditions, especially during periods of high rainfall.
- It underscores the need for further research into how climatic factors influence the spread of diseases such as dermatophilosis.
- The study raises questions about the potential impact of climate change on the incidence and spread of animal diseases.
