Ovarian ultrasonography in the mare.
Abstract: Ultrasonography has become indispensable in the control of equine reproduction. Mare ovary layers are inverted with respect to other species, with the follicles and corpus luteum found inside the ovary; only large follicles protrude from the organ's surface. This renders the making of diagnoses via rectal palpation of the ovaries very difficult. Ultrasound imaging, however, provides another avenue of examination. Since its first use in 1980, the diagnostic potential of ultrasonography has greatly improved. Colour Doppler ultrasonography can even asses blood flow, allowing for much better monitoring of ovarian activity. This study discusses the use of ultrasound, and in particular colour Doppler ultrasonography, in the monitoring of mare ovarian function and disease.

The research article discusses the use and benefits of ultrasonography, specifically color Doppler ultrasonography, in monitoring and diagnosing ovarian function and disease in mares (female horses).
Ultrasonography in Equine Reproduction
- The study indicates that ultrasonography has grown to be an invaluable tool in the management of equine reproduction. Horses have a unique ovarian structure where the follicles and corpus luteum are found inside the ovary unlike in other species. Hence, only large follicles protrude from the ovary’s surface, making diagnoses via traditional rectal palpation difficult.
The Advent of Ultrasonography
- The use of ultrasonography was first incorporated in 1980 and since then its diagnostic potential has considerably evolved. The non-invasive, real-time imaging method allows for easier and more effective evaluation of the internal structures of the mare’s ovary that are difficult to palpate.
Color Doppler Ultrasonography
- More advanced than traditional ultrasonography, color Doppler ultrasonography not only provides images but also enables the evaluation of blood flow. By assessing the rate and volume of blood flow within the ovary, it allows for integrated monitoring of ovarian activities, thus better facilitating disease diagnosis and effectiveness of reproductive strategies.
Implications of the Study
- This research introduces a more effective approach to managing mare reproduction and diagnosing possible ovarian disease. This sophisticated imaging technology not only enhances visualization but also provides functional information regarding the blood flow within the ovary, taking equine reproduction control and management to a new level.
