Percutaneous ultrasound-guided pyelography aided diagnosis of ectopic ureter and hydronephrosis in a 3-week-old filly.
Abstract: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous pyelography has previously been used in dogs to diagnose ectopic ureter. To the authors' knowledge its use has never been reported in the horse. This paper reports the technique used in a three-week-old filly with a suspected ectopic ureter. Pyelography can be performed under sedation and is a relatively simple, safe procedure. The technique enables assessment of individual renal function through collection and analysis of urine from each renal pelvis.

The research article examines the use of percutaneous ultrasound-guided pyelography, a specific medical procedure, in diagnosing an ectopic ureter and hydronephrosis in a young female horse, otherwise known as a filly.
Introduction and Background
- The research paper is centered around the application of a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure known as percutaneous ultrasound-guided pyelography.
- This method has traditionally been employed in dogs for the diagnosis of an ectopic ureter, which is a disorder where one or both ureters do not connect properly with the bladder.
- However, this research work attempts to explore the effectiveness and efficiency of this procedure in diagnosing similar condition in horses, which according to the authors has not been previously reported.
- The case under study is a three-week-old filly (young female horse) suspected of having an ectopic ureter.
The Procedure and its Advantages
- Percutaneous ultrasound-guided pyelography is carried out under sedation and is touted by the researchers as a fairly simple and safe process.
- The application of ultrasound allows the procedure to be minimally invasive by directing the physician to the most appropriate location for intervention.
- One of the key benefits of this technique is that it enables an evaluation of individual kidney function by facilitating the collection and analysis of urine from each renal pelvis.
- This aspect is particularly useful as it provides detailed information about the functioning of each kidney separately, contributing to a more precise diagnosis and potentially guiding treatment options.
Evaluation of the Study
- The research emphasizes the uniqueness of this study by stating that to the authors’ knowledge, the use of percutaneous ultrasound-guided pyelography for diagnosing an ectopic ureter in a horse has not been previously documented.
- The study signifies a breakthrough in equine diagnosis as it extends a proven method from one species (dogs) to another (horses) while also diagnosing a rare condition in the latter.
