Perirectal abscess, colic, and dyschezia in a horse.
Abstract: A quarter horse gelding with intermittent colic was diagnosed with a perirectal abscess and dyschezia. Rectal ultrasonography identified a multiloculated, fluid-filled mass. A perirectal abscess was diagnosed when the mass ruptured and drained into the rectum. The abscess was treated successfully with warm soapy water enemas and trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole.

This research article reports on a case study of a quarter horse gelding suffering from intermittent colic, which was eventually diagnosed as a perirectal abscess and dyschezia, and treated successfully.
Objective Overview
The study aims to present the diagnosis and effective treatment of a perirectal abscess and dyschezia in a quarter horse gelding that initially presented with intermittent colic symptoms.
Case Presentation
- The horse subject was a gelding of the quarter horse breed, suffering from intermittent bouts of colic.
- Colic in horses is characterized by abdominal discomfort, which can range from mild to intense. It is a common affliction in horses and can be caused by a variety of reasons, including gastrointestinal tract disorders, such as an infection or inflammation.
- The gelding’s condition intensified over time, and it was further diagnosed with a perirectal abscess and dyschezia.
- A perirectal abscess is a painful pocket of pus that develops in the rectal area, often a result of an infection.
- Dyschezia refers to the condition of painful or difficult defecation, which is usually secondary to another underlying issue, in this case, the perirectal abscess.
Diagnosis Procedure
- A rectal ultrasonography was performed on the horse, which revealed a fluid-filled mass that had multiple sections, or was multiloculated.
- Upon rupturing and draining into the rectum, it further confirmed the diagnosis of the mass as a perirectal abscess.
Treatment and Conclusion
- The perirectal abscess was treated successfully using warm soapy water enemas and a course of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole.
- Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole is a type of antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.
- The successful treatment of this case reveals valuable insights for the understanding and control of such conditions in horses. It particularly underscores the importance of detailed investigation in cases of colic symptoms to rule out or confirm perirectal abscess and dyschezia.
