Pharyngeal cyst in a 5-year-old Dutch Warmblood.
Abstract: A pharyngeal cyst was diagnosed in a 5-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare, after presentation for coughing, dyspnea, and abnormal respiratory noise. Complete surgical excision was performed and the mare returned to normal function and performance. Histopathology found no evidence of thyroglossal duct remnants. This research reports the case of a 5-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare diagnosed with a pharyngeal cyst, which was cured by surgical removal.
Case Presentation
- This study revolves around a five-year-old Dutch Warmblood horse, particularly a female – mare, which was brought with symptoms of coughing, difficulty in breathing (known as dyspnea), and abnormal breathing sounds.
- The diagnosis revealed that these symptoms were due to a pharyngeal cyst.
The pharynx is a part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity, leading to the esophagus. A cyst is a sac-like pocket of tissue that contains fluid, air, or other substances. A pharyngeal cyst means a cyst is present in the pharynx area.
Treatment and Results
- A complete surgical excision, implying the entire cyst was surgically removed, was performed on the mare to treat the cyst.
- After the treatment, it is reported that the mare returned to normal function and performance. This means that the coughing, breathing difficulty and abnormal respiratory noise stopped, showing a successful cure.
Post-surgery Analysis
- After the excision, an histopathology was performed on the cyst. Histopathology refers to the microscopic examination of tissues to study the manifestations of the disease. This is usually done to determine the nature and severity of the disease.
- Here, it was specifically looked for evidence of thyroglossal duct remnants. The thyroglossal duct is a structure normally present only in embryonic development. If remnants of this duct persist into adulthood, it can lead to the formation of undesired cysts. In this horse, no such remnants were found.
This case study thus provides information about the diagnosis, treatment, and post-surgery examination of a pharyngeal cyst in a horse. This investigation sheds light on the procedures needed for successful cure of a pharyngeal cyst.
