Plasma concentrations of sodium benzylpenicillin after intrauterine infusion in pony mares.
Abstract: Plasma concentrations of sodium benzylpenicillin were measured following intrauterine infusion at a dose rate of 22,000 u/kg (250,000 u/ml). The reproductive status of the mare at the time of infusion did not appear to influence plasma concentrations of penicillin, but preswabbing the endometrium for bacteriological culture resulted in peak plasma concentrations which were nearly twice those found in unswabbed mares.

This research article studies the effects of intrauterine infusion of sodium benzylpenicillin on plasma concentrations in pony mares. It explores how the mares’ reproductive status and pre-swabbing the endometrium affect the peak plasma concentrations.
Research Context
- The research is focused on determining the plasma concentrations of sodium benzylpenicillin after it has been administered to pony mares through an intrauterine infusion.
- Sodium Benzylpenicillin is an antibiotic, often used in the treatment of bacterial infections. The study takes into special consideration the reproductive status of the pony mare and the potential effects that this may have.
Methodology
- The researchers measured the plasma concentrations of sodium benzylpenicillin after the drug was administered at a dose rate of 22,000 u/kg, which equals to 250,000 u/ml.
- The reproductive status of the mare at the time of infusion was also recorded. This was done to assess whether this variable influenced the plasma concentrations of the antibiotic.
Findings
- The researchers found that the reproductive status of the mare at the time of infusion did not seem to influence the plasma concentrations of penicillin.
- However, the study did observe that preswabbing the endometrium for bacteriological culture resulted in peak plasma concentrations that were nearly twice those found in unswabbed mares.
Implications of Research
- This research sheds light on the influence of certain factors on the manner in which the body of a pony mare responds to sodium benzylpenicillin. It indicates that while the reproductive status of the mare does not significantly impact plasma concentrations of the drug, the bacteriological status of the endometrium plays a noteworthy role.
- These findings can be utilised in veterinary care and treatment for evidencing the importance of preswabbing before administering antibiotics.
