Preliminary study of laryngeal sacculectomy in horses, using a neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laser technique.

This study explores the use of a specific type of laser, called a neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laser, in a surgical procedure to remove part of the larynx of horses, a procedure called laryngeal sacculectomy. The researchers’ preliminary results show that this laser technique is efficient and straightforward with few complications, though further refinement is needed before recommending it for wider clinical use.

Objective and Methodology

• The primary goal of this study was to test an alternative method for performing a laryngeal sacculectomy. Traditionally, this procedure is carried out through a laryngotomy incision, typically used to treat laryngeal hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the larynx). In contrast, this research sought to use a neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet laser transendoscopically (via an endoscope) in a non-contact manner.
• The study involved six horses in its initial phase.

Results

• Results from the preliminary trial found that this new procedure was straightforward, quick, and labor-efficient, with minimal reported complications.
• From an endoscopic perspective, the site subjected to lased sacculectomy showed signs of healing 42 days following the procedure.
• Nevertheless, a microscopic analysis undertaken on the same day revealed remnants of mucosal tissue beneath the bed of granulation (a stage in the healing process).
• The laser energy was also found to cause thermal damage to tissue in the immediate vicinity of the lased saccule.
