Prevalence of infiltrative lymphocytic mural folliculitis in equine inflammatory skin diseases.
Abstract: Infiltrative lymphocytic mural folliculitis (ILMF) is a histopathological reaction pattern reported to occur in a small number of equine inflammatory dermatoses. However, the prevalence of ILMF in a variety of equine dermatoses has not been reported. Skin biopsy specimens from 250 horses with inflammatory dermatoses and from 27 horses with physically healthy skin were therefore evaluated. ILMF was present in 82% of the diseased skin specimens examined. ILMF was not seen in physically healthy skin. It appears that ILMF is frequently seen in a wide variety of equine inflammatory dermatoses and therefore is of little diagnostic significance. However, ILMF is not seen in physically healthy equine skin and the presence of lymphocytes in equine hair follicle epithelium should therefore be considered abnormal.

This research examines the commonness of a specific histopathological reaction, infiltrative lymphocytic mural folliculitis (ILMF), in horses with various inflammatory skin diseases. The findings suggest that while ILMF often occurs in diseased skin, it is not a unique indicator of any particular disease, but rather could be used to identify abnormal skin conditions in horses.
Introduction to Infiltrative Lymphocytic Mural Folliculitis (ILMF)
- In the realm of veterinary science, ILMF is a histological pattern related to inflammation and is reported to occur in a small subset of equine inflammatory dermatoses, which include various skin diseases horses may suffer from.
- Until the present study, no research had been conducted to understand the prevalence of ILMF in a wide range of equine dermatoses.
- The purpose of this study was to fill this knowledge gap and understand how often ILMF occurs in horses with various skin diseases.
Research Methodology
- Skin biopsy specimens were taken from 250 horses suffering from inflammatory dermatoses.
- These were compared to specimens from 27 horses with physically healthy skin as a control group.
- The main goal was to evaluate the presence and frequency of ILMF in these skin samples.
Study Findings
- The results indicated that ILMF was present in a significant 82% of the skin samples taken from diseased horses.
- Interestingly, ILMF was not identified in any of the samples from the horses with healthy skin.
Implications of the Research
- The high prevalence of ILMF in horses with inflammatory dermatoses suggests that it’s a common occurrence in various skin diseases and therefore isn’t particularly valuable as a unique diagnostic marker for any specific disease.
- However, the complete absence of ILMF in healthy skin samples indicates that the presence of lymphocytes in equine hair follicle epithelium (which happens in ILMF) is abnormal for healthy conditions.
- It suggests that ILMF could potentially be used as an indicator of abnormal or unhealthy skin conditions in horses.
