Racing performance of Thoroughbred horses after arthroscopic surgery of the carpus.
Abstract: The case record, and subsequent racing performance, of 110 horses that had undergone arthroscopic surgery of the carpus, were reviewed. Of these, 87% resumed racing, with 43% able to win at least one race, after surgery. Horses with chip fractures from the distal radius had the best prognosis, while horses with sagittal fractures of the third carpal bone had the poorest. The performance of horses with bilateral lesions was similar to those with unilateral lesions. It was concluded that arthroscopic surgery was a suitable technique for the diagnosis and treatment of carpal lesions in the horse.

The research focuses on analyzing the performance of 110 Thoroughbred horses that underwent arthroscopic surgery of the carpus. The post-surgery analysis showed that 87% of these horses were able to resume racing and around 43% won at least one race following the surgery.
Overview and Methodology
- The research paper centers around assessing the impact of arthroscopic surgery on carpal lesions in Thoroughbred horses. The sample size for this study was 110 horses, and their post-surgical racing performance was critically analyzed.
- The surgery was primarily performed to treat fractures and other carpal conditions in horses. The prognosis of the horses depended on the type of fracture they had. This involved checking if the fractures were chip fractures from the distal radius or sagittal fractures of the third carpal bone.
Results and Analysis
- Post-surgery, 87% of the horses were able to resume racing, testifying to the positive impact of the arthroscopic procedure.
- About 43% of these horses managed to win at least one race after their surgery indicating a relatively high success rate of the procedure.
- As far as the type of fracture is concerned, horses with chip fractures from the distal radius had the best prognosis, meaning they healed better and performed well after surgery. However, those with sagittal fractures of the third carpal bone showed the poorest recovery rate.
- The researcher also established that the performance of horses with bilateral lesions was comparable to those with unilateral lesions.
Conclusion
- On analyzing the racing performance of the Thoroughbred horses post-arthroscopic surgery, the researcher concluded that the surgical procedure is a suitable technique for the diagnosis and treatment of carpal lesions in horses.
- It was speculated that the horses not only coped with the surgical intervention successfully but, in most cases, also returned to their racing careers, some successfully winning races.
