Repair of superior palpebral defect in a horse by use of silicone subdermal implant.
Abstract: A silicone subdermal implant was used in the surgical repair of a superior palpebral defect in a horse. The right superior palpebra was missing from the lateral canthus superiorly to the 1 o'clock position, and a corneal ulcer, anterior uveitis, and right micropalpebral fissure also were observed. Lateral canthotomy and canthoplasty were performed to enlarge the palpebral fissure, and a silicone implant was inserted in the superior palpebra to replace the missing tarsal plate. These procedures resulted in a successful reconstruction, with improvement of palpebral function.

The research documents a successful surgical procedure on a horse where a silicone implant was used to repair a missing section of its upper eyelid, improving its eyelid function.
Context of the Study
- The research focused on a case where a horse had a missing piece on its upper eyelid (referred to as superior palpebra).
- The horse also had additional afflictions such as corneal ulcer, anterior uveitis, and a narrowed eye gap (micropalpebral fissure) on its right side.
- The conditions mentioned posed serious challenges to the horse’s eye functioning properly.
Chosen Method and Application
- To restore the horse’s eyelid, a silicone implant was used. Silicone is known for its compatibility with body fluids and tissues, making it an ideal material in prosthetics.
- Before the implant was inserted, certain surgical procedures like lateral canthotomy and canthoplasty were performed. These procedures specifically aimed at enlarging the narrow eye gap and preparing the remaining eyelid to receive the silicone implant.
- The silicone implant was purposed to replace the missing tarsal plate – the dense connective tissue that provides the major support for an eyelid’s structure.
Results
- Applying this surgical technique and using a silicone implant to repair the superior palpebral defect proved successful.
- This procedure not only filled the physical gap left by a missing piece of the upper eyelid but also remarkably improved the overall function of the horse’s eyelid, addressing complications in the eyelid’s function caused by the missing tissue.
Implications
- The success of this operation implies that silicone subdermal implants can be an effective solution in similar veterinary ophthalmic cases.
- More research and repetitions of this procedure could validate its effectiveness and safety, potentially standardizing it as a go-to procedure in the field of veterinary opthalmology where such eyelid defects are present.
