Sensory integration and therapeutic riding at summer camp: occupational performance outcomes.
Abstract: Occupational performance outcomes from a summer camp for children with sensory modulation disorder were examined. Sensory integration based programming was incorporated into a one week summer day camp that featured therapeutic riding. Using a modified interview format, the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) was administered to camp participants and their families two weeks prior to and one week after camp. Ten families participated in the study. Comparison of the families' ratings revealed a significant and positive change in the children's behaviors. The COPM was highly useful and provided the opportunity to examine the impact of the camp experience from an individual and occupational perspective.

This study investigates the impacts of a summer camp, equipped with sensory integration programs and therapeutic riding activities, on children with sensory modulation disorder. The results showed improved behavior and occupational performance in these children.
Research Goals and Methodology
- The research aimed to understand the performance outcomes from a unique summer camp designed for children diagnosed with sensory modulation disorder. The disorder affects how children process and respond to sensory input.
- This camp incorporated a sensory integration-based program involving therapeutic riding, which is believed to have various benefits for these children in terms of their overall development, behavior, and occupational performance.
- To measure the outcomes, a modified version of the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) was employed. The COPM is an individualized measure designed to detect change in a client’s self-perception of performance and satisfaction of their everyday living.
- Interviews using this measure were held with the camp participants and their families two weeks before the beginning of the camp and then repeated one week after the conclusion of the camp.
Key Findings
- Ten families participated in the entire process of this study.
- The comparison of the families’ ratings showed significant positive changes in the children’s behaviors. This indicates the potential effectiveness of the camp’s sensory integration program and therapeutic riding activities in improving the condition of children with sensory modulation disorder.
- It was noted that the COPM served as a highly useful tool in this study. With its individualized nature, it allowed researchers to measure the impact of the camp from an individual child’s perspective, as well as from the broader occupational perspective.
Summary
- The study provides evidence supporting the benefits of therapy programs for children with sensory modulation disorder, particularly those involving sensory integration and therapeutic riding.
- It indicates that such programs can have positive impacts on the behaviors and occupational performance of these children. However, future research with a larger sample size would help to reinforce and build upon these findings.
