Serum interleukin-6 concentrations in endotoxin-infused neonatal foals.
Abstract: Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentration was measured in 11 colostrum-fed (CF) and 8 colostrum-deprived (CD) 2- to 3-day-old foals after foals were infused with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; Escherichia coli O55:B5 endotoxin, 0.5 microgram/kg of body weight in sterile saline [0.9% NaCl] solution). Four CF and 2 CD foals were given saline solution alone. Serum IL-6 concentration was estimated by use of an in vitro proliferative bioassay, using the IL-6 dependent B.13.29 clone 9 cells. Interleukin-6 concentration increased in all LPS-infused foals, and geometric mean serum IL-6 concentration was significantly higher in CF than CD foals 30 and 90 minutes after infusion. Both LPS-infused groups had multiple spikes of mean IL-6 concentration that peaked at 120 minutes in CF foals and 150 minutes in CD foals. Results indicated that IL-6 is produced in neonatal foals in response to LPS infusion. Furthermore, colostrum deprivation resulted in longer times to peak mean serum IL-6 concentration and tended to reduce serum IL-6 concentration in neonatal foals.

The research article is about the increase in serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations in newborn foals when exposed to Escherichia coli endotoxin and the effect of colostrum consumption on this reaction.
Objective of the Study
The study was conducted to measure and analyze the concentration of interleukin-6 (IL-6), a type of cytokine that plays a role in inflammatory response, in newborn foals that had been exposed to Escherichia coli endotoxin. Further, the researchers wanted to understand the effect of colostrum intake on this response.
Methodology
- The researchers selected a total of 19 neonatal foals, with 11 of them being colostrum-fed (CF) and 8 being colostrum-deprived (CD).
- The foals, aged 2 to 3 days old, were infused with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of Escherichia coli, to invoke an immune response in the body. A controlled subgroup of foals were given only a saline solution.
- The concentration of IL-6 in the foal’s serum was estimated using an in vitro bioassay.
Results
- The IL-6 concentration increased in all foals that were infused with LPS. However, the concentration was significantly higher in colostrum-fed foals than in the ones deprived of colostrum, particularly 30 and 90 minutes after infusion.
- Both LPS-infused groups saw multiple spikes in mean IL-6 concentration, peaking at 120 minutes for colostrum-fed foals and at 150 minutes for colostrum-deprived foals.
- The study concluded that neonatal foals produced IL-6 in response to LPS infusion. This showcases the innate immune response of the foals when exposed to potential pathogens.
- In addition, it was observed that colostrum deprivation in neonatal foals resulted in a delayed and reduced IL-6 response, highlighting the potential role of colostrum in strengthening the immune response in newborns.
