Six cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach of the horse.

Abstract: Six cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach in horses seen at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine are compared with 15 similar cases reported previously. Clinical signs included anorexia in all cases, emaciation, fever, anaemia and/or palpable abdominal masses in 3, colic in 2 and dysphagia in one case. Haematological studies revealed normochromic, normocytic anaemia in 3 and absolute neutrophilia in 5 cases. Peritoneal fluid analysis was performed in 4 cases and revealed slightly to moderately elevated total protein concentrations in 3 and a markedly elevated number of white blood cells in 2 cases. Exploratory laparotomy, performed in 3 cases, was essential for a definitive diagnosis. The data presented here suggest that squamous cell carcinoma of the equine stomach may be increasing in frequency and demonstrate the need for prospective epidemiological studies.

This article presents and analyzes six occurrences of squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach in horses, and discusses the increasing prevalence of this condition.

Article Analysis

The research paper discusses six cases observed by the researchers of squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach in horses. These cases are examined and compared with 15 similar precedents reported prior to this study.

  • The clinical symptoms manifested in all six horses included loss of desire to eat. Some of the horses also showed other signs such as weight loss, fever, anaemia and/or palpable abdominal masses. Some horses experienced abdominal pain (colic), and one had difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).
  • Blood tests were performed, revealing average-sized, normally coloured (normochromic, normocytic) anaemia in three horses and an increase in the number of white blood cells (neutrophils) in five horses.
  • Peritoneal fluid analysis was done in four of the horses, the results of which showed slightly to moderately raised overall protein concentrations in three horses and a noticeably increased number of white blood cells in two horses.
  • For a proportion of the cases, exploratory laparotomy, a surgical procedure, was essential to confirm the diagnosis of the cancer.

The research suggests a potential increasing occurrence of stomach squamous cell carcinoma in horses, despite being a less frequent type of cancer. It emphasizes the importance of further prospective epidemiological studies, meaning research that seeks to understand the frequency, distribution, and determinants of disease in populations, to confirm this increase and help to identify potential causes and preventative measures.
