[Skin problems, edema and diarrhea in a yearling stallion. Symptoms of a cecum-in-colon invagination?].

Abstract: A Dutch Warmblood yearling stallion was referred for skin lesions, oedema and diarrhoea. At rectal palpation a cecocolonic intussusception was diagnosed, that might have been present for at least one week. A short literature review of cecocolonic intussusception is given.

A Dutch Warmblood yearling stallion suffering from skin lesions, swelling, and diarrhea was diagnosed with a cecocolonic intussusception, a condition where part of the intestine has been folded into itself.

Introduction to the Case

This case study is about a Dutch Warmblood yearling stallion that presented symptoms of skin lesions, swelling (oedema) and diarrhea. These are severe symptoms that required urgent attention and as such, the stallion was immediately referred for examination.

Diagnostic Process

Upon examination, veterinarians carried out a rectal palpation, which is a procedure where a veterinarian uses his or her hand to feel the interior of the horse’s rectum.

  • This process revealed a cecocolon intussusception in the stallion.
  • A cecocolonic intussusception is a medical condition where a part of the intestine, specifically the cecum, has folded or slipped into the section of the intestine right next to it, the colon. This is a serious condition can disrupt the flow of digested food through the intestine and cause significant discomfort and further complications, such as blockages.
  • Based on the condition and symptoms of the horse, it appears the cecocolonic intussusception had possibly been present for at least one week.

Further Literature Review

The report also includes a brief literature review of cecocolonic intussusception.

  • The literature review likely discusses the causes, symptoms, and treatment options of cecocolonic intussusception, providing further knowledge and insight into the condition.
  • It would also provide relevant studies and cases which would facilitate a deeper understanding of the prevalence and prognosis of similar cases.

Overall, the case highlights the importance of providing urgent medical attention to horses experiencing such symptoms, and their potential link to serious intestinal disorders.
