Small intestinal strangulation caused by a mesodiverticular band and diverticulum on the mesenteric border of the small intestine in a horse.
Abstract: A 4-year-old Quarter horse stallion was presented for acute abdominal pain. Exploratory celiotomy revealed a mesenteric diverticulum of the jejunum and mesodiverticular band that were associated with small intestinal strangulation. Resection and anastomosis were performed. A second celiotomy was performed due to adhesions. The horse recovered completely and returned to training. The research concerns a Quarter horse stallion that was treated for abdominal pain, found to be due to a strangulation of the small intestine caused by a diverticulum. The issue was treated surgically, with the horse making a complete recovery.
Case Presentation and Diagnosis
- The study revolves around a 4-year-old Quarter horse stallion that was brought in for acute abdominal pain. The horse was examined in order to diagnose the cause of the pain.
- An exploratory celiotomy, a surgical procedure where the abdominal cavity is opened and explored, was conducted. The surgeons discovered a mesenteric diverticulum in the jejunum (part of the small intestine) and a mesodiverticular band. Both these conditions were causing strangulation of the small intestine, leading to the abdominal pain the horse was experiencing.
Treatment Administered
- Once the cause of the horse’s pain was identified, a surgical treatment plan was developed. The surgeons performed a resection, removing the affected portions of the small intestine, and an anastomosis, creating a direct connection between the remaining sections of the small intestine.
- Due to the occurrence of adhesions (bands of fibrous tissue that can develop after surgery, connecting tissue surfaces that normally are separate), a second celiotomy had to be performed. This subsequent surgery was carried out in order to remove the newly formed adhesions.
Postoperative Recovery and Outcome
- After the surgical procedures, the horse made a full recovery from the small intestinal strangulation. There are no mentions of any complications or long-term impacts as a result of the conditions or surgeries.
- The horse was even able to return to its training routine, indicating a successful medical intervention and recovery process.
