Some clinical observations on the effect of an implant of oestradiol benzoate in brood mares.
Abstract: The clinical effects and therapeutic value of a 500 mg implant of oestradiol benzoate was observed in thirty-nine Thoroughbred brood mares showing various abnormalities of the ovary and/or the reproductive tract. Sixteen similarly affected, untreated mares acted as controls. The implant was inserted during the early part of the normal anoestrous period and was removed 6 to 10 weeks later. The conception rate among the treated group (59%) during the onset of the ensuing breeding season was significantly higher (P less than 0-02) than that in the control group. The value of this form of treatment in septic endometritis and as an anabolic aid in cases of immaturity is also discussed.

This research article investigates the efficiency of a therapy—one involving the implant of oestradiol benzoate—in Thoroughbred brood mares suffering from reproductive abnormalities. The results indicate that the treatment significantly improved conception rates in comparison to a control group, showcasing potential value in treating septic endometritis and advancing maturity.
Research Methodology
- The primary subjects of this research were thirty-nine Thoroughbred brood mares exhibiting different ovarian and reproductive tract abnormalities.
- As a comparison, sixteen similarly affected but untreated mares were used as a control group.
- The researchers implemented a 500 mg implant of oestradiol benzoate into the test group during the early phase of the typical anoestrous period (the period of sexual inactivity between two breeding seasons). The implant was subsequently removed 6 to 10 weeks after insertion.
Findings and Discussions
- A significant improvement in conception rate was observed when the subsequent breeding season began in the treated group, which was 59% compared to the control group. The level of statistical significance was confirmed with a P-value less than 0.02.
- The results insinuate the potential usefulness of the treatment in managing specific conditions including septic endometritis—an inflammation of the inner layer of the uterus caused by bacterial infection.
- Additionally, the treatment was found to assist in the maturation process in cases of immaturity, thus demonstrating its dual role as an anabolic aid.
Practical Implications
- The evidence from this study indicates that a 500 mg implant of oestradiol benzoate could be beneficial in increasing conception rates among breeding mares dealing with various reproductive issues.
- Moreover, the studied treatment might also show beneficial results in the therapy of septic endometritis and support the treatment of immaturity in Thoroughbred brood mares.
