Surgical correction of strictures of the large colon in three horses.

Abstract: An extensive stricture of the left dorsal colon in a Thoroughbred colt was resected and the colon was anastomosed. In two horses, circumferential strictures at the pelvic flexure 2.5 to 3 cm long were corrected with a modified Heineke-Mikulicz pyloroplasty technique. The horses were reported to be doing well at 6, 8, and 45 months, respectively.

The research article discusses a study made on three horses who underwent surgical correction for strictures, or unusual narrowing, of the large colon. Different methods were used and all horses were reported to be doing well after 6, 8, and 45 months respectively.

Objective of the Research

  • The main goal of this research was to explore the impact and efficacy of surgical procedures in treating strictures in the large colon of horses.

Methodology of the Research

  • The British researchers conducted surgery on three horses that had varied cases of colon strictures.
  • A Thoroughbred colt had an extensive stricture in its left dorsal colon. The researchers removed this section (resected) and joined the colon back together (anastomosed).
  • In the other two horses, the strictures were around the pelvic flexure and ranged from 2.5 to 3 cm long.
  • In those cases, a modified Heineke-Mikulicz pyloroplasty technique, a specialized surgical procedure typically used to enlarge a narrow exit from the stomach, was adapted and applied to address and correct the strictures.

Results of the Research

  • The surgical procedures were deemed effective, as all three horses were reported to be in good condition post-surgery at 6, 8, and 45 months respectively.
  • This suggests that both the resection-anastomosis procedure for extensive strictures and the modified Heineke-Mikulicz pyloroplasty technique for circumferential strictures can be successful in treating large colon strictures in horses.

Significance of the Research

  • This study provides valuable insight for veterinarians and surgeons on treating colic in horses, which is often attributed to problems in the large colon.
  • By demonstrating the potential effectiveness of these surgical approaches, the authors inform the improvement of care standards and interventions for horse health.
