Surgical repair of an intrathoracic esophageal pulsion diverticulum in a horse.

Abstract: An intrathoracic esophageal pulsion diverticulum causing repeated episodes of esophageal obstruction in a Morgan weanling colt was diagnosed by endoscopy, positive contrast radiography, and pleuroscopy. Surgical excision of the diverticulum alleviated clinical signs, and the horse was able to resume a normal diet by day 6. After 9 months the colt remains asymptomatic.

The abstract describes a study where a young horse suffering from an esophageal issue was diagnosed and treated successfully through surgery. After the operation, the horse swiftly returned to its normal diet and showed no signs of symptoms after 9 months.

Objective of the Study

  • The purpose of this research study was to diagnose and treat an esophageal issue, specifically an intrathoracic esophageal pulsion diverticulum, in a young weanling colt. The issue was causing the colt repeated episodes of esophageal obstruction which led the researchers to explore a surgical solution for the problem.

Methodology

  • The researchers used endoscopy, positive contrast radiography, and pleuroscopy for diagnosis. Endoscopy involves inserting a small camera into the body to view the esophagus, while contrast radiography uses a contrast medium to make certain structures in the body easily visible on an X-ray. Pleuroscopy is another endoscopic procedure used for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of pleural diseases.

Results of the Study

  • Through surgical excision of the diverticulum, the clinical signs in the colt were alleviated. This suggests that surgery was a successful solution to the young horse’s issue.
  • The horse was able to resume a normal diet by day 6 post-surgery, indicating that the operation did not hamper its ability to eat and digest food properly.

Conclusion

  • The most significant outcome of this study was that the colt remained symptom-free after 9 months. This points to the long-term effectiveness of the surgical intervention.
  • The results of this study may provide valuable insight for similar veterinary cases where a horse is suffering from repeated esophageal obstruction due to an intrathoracic esophageal pulsion diverticulum.
