Surgical repair of an oesophageal stricture and prestenotic dilatation in a horse.
Abstract: Prestenotic oesophageal dilatation and stricture were diagnosed in a horse with a history of trauma in the cervical area and recurrent oesophageal obstruction. The diagnosis was established on the basis of the clinical examination, endoscopy, and positive contrast oesophagography. Conservative treatment was unsuccessful and surgical intervention was necessary. Oesophageal myectomy combined with myoplasty was performed, simultaneously relieving the dilatation and the stricture. No abnormalities were detected 8 weeks after surgery. The horse was on a normal diet and oesophageal obstruction did recur in the subsequent 14 months.

The research discusses a successful surgical repair of an oesophageal stricture and prestenotic dilatation in a horse, that had previously experienced trauma and recurrent obstructions in the oesophagus. Despite conservative treatments having failed, surgical intervention managed to restore the horse’s condition, with no obstructions recurring in over a year following the surgery.
Diagnosis of the Horse’s Condition
- The paper presents a case of a horse diagnosed with prestenotic oesophageal dilatation and stricture. The horse had a history of trauma in the cervical area and recurrent oesophageal obstruction.
- The diagnosis was established following a clinical examination, endoscopy, and a positive contrast oesophagography test.
- Despite attempts at conservative treatment, the measures did not successfully resolve the horse’s condition, necessitating surgical intervention.
Surgical Procedure and Results
- An oesophageal myectomy, combined with myoplasty, was performed to simultaneously address the dilatation and stricture.
- Following the surgery, the horse was found to be free of any abnormalities eight weeks post-operation.
- Furthermore, the horse returned to a normal diet, and critical to its wellbeing, there was no recurrence of oesophageal obstruction in the subsequent 14 months post-surgery.
Significance of the Study
- This study notes the effectiveness of surgical intervention in treating prestenotic oesophageal dilatation and strictures in horses, particularly in cases where conservative treatment options have failed.
- The surgical techniques employed in this study – oesophageal myectomy and myoplasty – demonstrated a successful outcome in eliminating the horse’s oesophageal obstruction, with no recurrence seen within a fourteen months postoperative period.
- These findings could thereby have significant implications for tackling similar cases in veterinary medicine, potentially serving as a guide for successful surgical treatment.
