[The occurence of the hindgut ciliate Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium (Ciliophora: Buetschliidae) from domestic horses in Cyprus].
Abstract: Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium was investigated in the intestine of horses, found in Cyprus. It was found in four of fifth horses examined and thus had a frequency of appearence of 80%. This study reports for the first time the presence of Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium in the intestine of Equids in Cyprus. In addition, it is the second report from the world. Specimens were found to be similar to the original description on the basis of morphological characters and biometric data.

This research article discusses the study of Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium, a microorganism present in the intestine of horses, primarily focusing on its presence within horses in Cyprus.
Identifying Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium in Cyprus
- The study focuses on investigating the microorganism Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium in the intestine of horses located in Cyprus. Part of the Buetschliidae family, it’s a type of hindgut ciliate, a group of microorganisms that reside in the large intestine of various animals.
- This research was prompted by the fact that there had been no prior reports or studies focusing on the presence of Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium in horses in Cyprus. The research makes it the first study of its kind within this specific geographical region.
Findings of the Study
- In the course of this study, five horses were examined for the presence of Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium in their intestine. The microscopic parasite was found in four of these, making for an appearance frequency of 80%.
- The study confirms the existence of Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium in the intestines of horses in Cyprus, marking it as a common intestinal inhabitant in the region.
Significance of the Study
- The research marks the first report of Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium’s presence within horses in Cyprus. More broadly, it’s only the second such report globally, indicating that studies on this organism have been limited.
- Specimens discovered in the study were similar to the original descriptions on the basis of morphological characters, i.e. physical traits, and biometric data, further corroborating the existence and characteristics of Hemiprorodon gymnoposthium.
