[The problem mare part 2: treatment].
Abstract: In this article different possible treatments for problem mares are discussed. The therapeutic possibilities vary and can be classified into anatomical correction, anti-infectious therapy, and treatment to enhance the uterine defence mechanisms. Anatomical correction and treatment with antibiotics are valuable therapies and have been used for many years. In recent years, stimulation of the mechanical defence mechanism of the uterus, by flushing it with physiological solution combined with parenteral oxytocin, has been shown to increase the chance of getting problem mares in foal.

This research paper explores various treatment options for problem mares, evaluating the efficacy of anatomical correction, anti-infectious therapy, and methods to enhance the uterine defence mechanisms.
Anatomical Correction
- The research investigates anatomical correction as one of the therapeutic possibilities for mares with reproductive issues. This category of treatment involves surgical or medical procedures to rectify any physical abnormalities or defects that might be impeding the mare’s ability to conceive or carry a foal to term.
Anti-Infectious Therapy
- Another field of treatment discussed in the research is anti-infectious therapy. This entails using antibiotics or other medications to combat any infections that might be present in the mare’s reproductive system. Infections can impair fertility in mares and can lead to problems during pregnancy. The article deems this form of therapy valuable as it has been successfully utilized for many years.
Enhancement of Uterine Defence Mechanisms
- Recently, enhancing the uterine defence mechanisms has emerged as an effective treatment approach. This involves stimulating the mechanical defence mechanism of the uterus. As per the study, flushing the uterus with a physiological solution combined with parenteral oxytocin has shown positive results.
- The mechanical defence mechanism is part of the mare’s innate immune system, which works to expel harmful substances such as bacteria and dead cells, thereby maintaining a clean environment suitable for fertilization and implantation. Stimulating this mechanism increases the mare’s chances of getting in foal.
In conclusion, the research suggests that all three treatments have their distinct merits. It is suggested that a combination of these therapies tailored to the individual mare’s needs could offer the best chances of successful reproduction. However, these treatments should always be administered under the supervision of a qualified vet.
