The use of nylon cable ties to repair rib fractures in neonatal foals.

Abstract: Commercially available nylon cable ties were used as a method of internal fixation for displaced rib fractures in 8 equine neonates. The procedure was effective, well-tolerated, rapid, and inexpensive. The use of nylon cable ties as internal fixation for displaced rib fractures in foals is an effective surgical procedure.

The research is about a medical procedure where commercially available nylon cable ties were utilised for the internal fixation of displaced rib fractures in newborn horses. The study saw favourable results, indicating the operation to be effective, rapid, easily accepted by the animals, and budget-friendly.

Objective of the Research

  • The main purpose of this research was to test the use of nylon cable ties, a type of readily available commercial product, as a method for the internal fixation of displaced rib fractures in newborn equines.

Methodology

  • In this study, the researchers used the nylon cable ties method on eight young equines with displaced rib fractures. The surgical procedure was then observed for its effectiveness, tolerance, speed, and cost.

Results

  • The procedure proved to be efficient in fixing the rib fractures, showing it to be a successful surgical intervention.
  • The procedure was also well-tolerated, meaning that the equine neonates didn’t exhibit harmful reactions or substantial discomfort.
  • Notably, the procedure was performed quickly, implying that it does not require an extended time for completion, which can be beneficial in emergency situations.
  • The research also pointed out that the surgical method was inexpensive, indicating that nylon cable ties could be a cost-effective solution for such medical cases in the veterinary field.

Conclusion

  • Based on the research findings, the utilisation of nylon cable ties as internal fixation for displaced rib fractures in foals is presented as an effective surgical procedure. This discovery can potentially expand the options for surgical interventions in veterinary medicine, especially for equine neonates with rib fractures.
