Thoracic emphysematous lymphadenitis in a foal.

Abstract: Emphysema of lymph nodes is a rare finding that has been described in different anatomical locations and related to specific diseases in different animal species. Herein is described a foal with Rhodococcus equi infection that presented with emphysema and granulomatous inflammation of the bronchial and mediastinal lymph nodes. This is the first report of emphysematous lymphadenitis in a horse.

This research article discusses the case of a foal that presented with a rare condition known as emphysematous lymphadenitis due to a Rhodococcus equi infection. The lymph nodes affected were those in the bronchial and mediastinal regions. This is the first time such a phenomenon has been reported in a horse.

Introduction to the Case

  • The research focuses on a unique case of a foal, which is a young horse, suffering from Rhodococcus equi infection.
  • The infection led to the foal developing a condition known as emphysematous lymphadenitis, which is specifically the emphysema of lymph nodes.

Rarity of the Condition

  • The condition explored in this research, emphysematous lymphadenitis, is rare, and it’s seldom that the emphysema infiltrates the lymph nodes.
  • Though there have been cases of this disease in various anatomical locations and across different animal species, its occurrence in horses remains undocumented prior to this case.

The Infection and its Consequences

  • The foal had been infected with Rhodococcus equi, a type of bacteria mainly affecting foals and to a lesser extent, immuno-compromised humans and other animals.
  • The infection resulted in both emphysema, a lung condition that causes shortness of breath, and granulomatous inflammation, an inflammatory response often associated with infections or foreign bodies, within the bronchial and mediastinal lymph nodes.

Significance of the Report

  • This case report adds to the body of veterinary knowledge by representing the first-ever documented case of emphysematous lymphadenitis in a horse.
  • It therefore offers valuable insights and data for the diagnosis and potential treatment of similar future cases in horses.
