Torsion of the uterus–a cause of colic in the mare.
Abstract: A case of uterine torsion in a mare with colic is described in which an early diagnosis was made and the torsion successfully reduced through a standing laparotomy with survival of both the mare and the foal. This case is used to stress the importance of thorough examination of all pregnant mares with colic in order to differentiate uterine torsion from other causes of abdominal pain, thereby avoiding delay in surgical correction and reducing the risk of fetal and/or maternal death. The advantages of the standing laparotomy are presented in support of this method of treatment of torsion of the gravid uterus.

This research article discusses a successful diagnosis and treatment of uterine torsion in a pregnant mare experiencing colic. The authors emphasize the importance of thorough examination of pregnant mares with colic to identify this condition and avoid delays in surgical treatment, thus increasing survival chances for both the mare and the foal.
Description of the Case
- The research paper focuses on a specific case of a mare with colic symptoms which turned out to be a result of uterine torsion – a condition in which the mare’s uterus twists around its axis, causing severe pain and potential risk to the fetus.
- The mare in this case study was diagnosed early which allowed the veterinary surgeons to carry out successful corrective surgery via a standing laparotomy – a surgical procedure performed while the animal remains standing.
- The result of the timely intervention was survival of both the mare and her foal, emphasizing the importance of early detection of this condition in pregnant mares exhibiting colic symptoms.
Significance of Thorough Examination
- The authors stress that colic in pregnant mares can be caused by more serious issues such as uterine torsion, which is different from other causes of abdominal pain.
- By distinguishing uterine torsion from other causes, one can avoid delay in necessary surgical correction, thereby reducing the risk of fetal and/or mare death.
Advantages of Standing Laparotomy
- This method of treatment, as shown in this case, has several advantages.
- The standing laparotomy technique is done without general anesthesia, thereby lowering the surgery risk.
- Additionally, the mare is able to bear the foal naturally after the procedure, without the need of further intervention.
- Undergoing surgery while standing can also significantly reduce recovery time for the horse and minimize distress.
