Treatment of traumatic arthritis in the horse with intra-articular orgotein (palosein).
Abstract: A total of 134 horses of various breeds were treated for aseptic arthritis of traumatic origin using Orgotein (Palosein). The drug was injected into 192 affected joints of these animals. Recovery rates of 94 per cent were recorded in cases which had shown lameness for less than 2 months before treatment commenced and 49 per cent in those lame for longer than 2 months.

This research looked at how the drug orgotein (Palosein) can be used to treat traumatic arthritis in horses. The treatment success rate is about 94% for horses who have been lame for under 2 months, but it drops to 49% for those lame for over 2 months.
Overview of the Research
- The study under consideration was carried out on a total of 134 horses from different breeds. The primary focus was on the treatment of aseptic arthritis caused by traumas using a drug known as Orgotein, also referred to as Palosein. This drug was directly injected into the 192 joints affected across the horses.
Efficacy of the Drug
- The effectiveness of Orgotein (Palosein) was gauged in terms of recovery rates. The findings were encouraging in that a high recovery rate of 94 percent was observed in horses that have shown lameness symptoms for less than two months prior to the commencement of treatment.
- However, the recovery rates dropped significantly to 49 percent in horses that have been in a lame state for more than two months before the onset of treatment.
Implications of the Findings
- The results of the research suggest that the drug Orgotein (Palosein) could be effective for treating traumatic arthritis in horses, particularly in cases diagnosed and treated early. It indicates the importance of prompt treatment to maximize the chances of a successful recovery.
- Lower recovery rates among horses lame for over two months before treatment might suggest that long-term lameness makes the disease more difficult to treat, giving an insight on the possible progression of traumatic arthritis in horses.
