Ultrasonographic diagnosis of aorto-iliac thrombosis.

Abstract: A linear array 5 mHz ultrasonic scanner was used to diagnose aorto-iliac thrombosis in a 3 year old Standardbred gelding. There are no reports in the literature of utilization of ultrasonography for visualization of an aortic thrombus. The technique is fairly non-invasive, requiring only a rectal examination with a linear array probe. Arteriography is the only other method described for actual visualization of a thrombus. This procedure is technically difficult and highly invasive.

The research article reports the use of a 5 mHz ultrasonic scanner to diagnose thrombosis in the aorta and iliac arteries of a 3-year-old horse, with an emphasis on ultrasonography’s non-invasive nature as opposed to alternative invasive procedures like arteriography.

Objective of the Research

  • The primary aim of the research was to diagnose aorto-iliac thrombosis in a 3-year-old Standardbred gelding using a 5 mHz ultrasonic scanner.
  • The researchers found out there were no previous indications of ultrasonography being used for visualizing aortic thrombus.

Methodology and Procedure

  • The researchers used a fairly non-invasive technique that only required a rectal examination with a linear array probe.
  • This made it distinct and possibly preferable over arteriography, another technique used for actual visualization of a thrombus, which they described as highly invasive.

Significance of the Research

  • This research extends the scope of diagnostic techniques for aorto-iliac thrombosis in horses, potentially offering a more comfortable and less complex alternative procedure for visualization of aortic thrombus.
  • Moreover, the observed effectiveness of the ultrasonic scanner in this study may further encourage the usage of ultrasonography for similar veterinary diagnoses in the future.
