Update on advanced semen-processing technologies and their application for in vitro embryo production in horses.
Abstract: The increased commercialisation of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in horses creates more opportunities to incorporate advanced reproductive technologies, such as sex-sorted, refrozen and lyophilised spermatozoa, into a breeding program. This paper reviews the status of these semen-handling technologies in light of their use in equine ICSI programs. Pregnancies have been achieved from each of these advanced technologies when combined with ICSI in horses, but refinements in the semen-handling processes underpinning these technologies are currently being explored to produce more reliable and practical improvements in the results from equine ICSI.

This research looks at updated advanced semen-processing technologies and their implementation for in vitro embryo production in horses, with a focus on the use of techniques such as sex-sorted, refrozen, and lyophilised spermatozoa in equine intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) practices.
Overview of Advanced Semen-Processing Technologies
- The researchers have shed light on advanced semen-processing technologies that are gaining momentum in the realm of horse reproduction. The focus is mainly on sex-sorted, refrozen, and lyophilised spermatozoa.
- These advanced technologies are being considered for their potential to bring about marked improvements in the outcomes of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), a reproductive procedure commonly used in horses.
- The commercialization of ICSI in horses is increasing, providing opportunities to incorporate such cutting-edge reproductive technologies into breeding programs.
Efficacy of the Technologies
- The paper reviews the effectiveness of these semen-handling technologies when used in equine ICSI programs.
- It is noted that pregnancies have been achieved from each of these advanced technologies when they are integrated with ICSI in horses.
- This shows the potential of these procedures to contribute to the success of in vitro embryo production in horses.
Refinements in the Techniques
- Besides discussing the potential and effectiveness of these technologies, the paper also highlights ongoing work in refining these semen-handling processes.
- The purpose of these refinements is to improve the reliability and practicality of results obtained from equine ICSI.
- This suggests that researchers are constantly working on these technologies to enhance their performance, thereby increasing the chances of successful pregnancies through ICSI.
