Use of bumetanide, a potent diuretic, to obtain urinary samples for dope testing in horses.

Abstract: Use of the potent, high-ceiling diuretic bumetanide made it possible to obtain urinary samples for dope testing of trotters within the 1st hour after the race. The drug was injected intravenously at a dose level of 10 mug/kg during the cold season of the year, but on warm days, a dose of 20 mug/kg was more reliable. These doses did not produce any side-effects and did not interfere with the detection of doping drugs, since bumetanide is not metabolized to a detectable degree and the unchanged drug appears only in extracts from acidic urine. By enhancing the clearance of drugs used for doping, bumetanide even provides favorable conditions for detection of such drugs.

The research article is about the successful use of bumetanide, a potent diuretic, to collect urine samples from race horses for doping tests.

Overview of the Research

The researchers conducted a study to test the efficacy of bumetanide, a potent diuretic, in helping obtain urine samples from horses for dope testing. The urine samples were required within the first hour after a race.

  • In the cold season, they injected the horses intravenously with a dose level of 10 micrograms per kilogram.
  • On warm days, a dose of 20 micrograms per kilogram was required to obtain the necessary diuretic effect.

Bumetanide and its Impact on Horses

The researchers observed that the doses administered did not cause any side-effects to the horses. This is significant because it shows that bumetanide can be used without causing harm.

  • Bumetanide did not interfere with the detection of doping drugs in the test samples. This is crucial because it means the diuretic didn’t yield false results for the doping tests.
  • Bumetanide is not metabolized significantly and the unchanged drug appears only in extracts from acidic urine. This information is key since metabolizing drugs can result in them being harder to detect during testing.

Advantages of Using Bumetanide

The study revealed that the use of bumetanide improved the detection of doping drugs. By increasing the clearance of such drugs in the horses’ systems, it provides favorable conditions for their detection.

  • The fast-acting nature of bumetanide and its ability to increase the clearance of drugs makes it an effective tool for dope testing in race horses.
  • This discovery is of practical importance in the world of horse racing where regular and reliable dope testing is paramount.
