Use of polysulphated glycosaminoglycan in equine lameness.
Abstract: Four cases of equine lameness were treated with intra-articular polysulphated glycosaminoglycan. Two, two-year-old flat racers were treated conservatively after traumatic injury. They subsequently became lame owing to the formation of new bone and osteophytes. Two older steeplechasers were lame owing to degenerative joint disease. The four horses were treated with intra-articular injections of polysulphated glycosaminoglycans and, after three or four injections, they became clinically sound and were able to continue racing with varying degrees of success.

The research article presents a study on the use of polysulphated glycosaminoglycan injections in treating lameness in horses, due to either traumatic injury induced lameness or degenerative joint disease, stating positive results with continued successful racing performance.
Objective of the Research
- The study was conducted to explore the effect of intra-articular polysulphated glycosaminoglycan injections on equine lameness caused by different underlying conditions: traumatic injury and degenerative joint disease.
Case Background
- In the study, four cases of equine lameness were selected, involving different horses with varied age and health conditions. Two of the subjects were two-year-old flat racers that had sustained traumatic injury and subsequently became lame due to new bone formation and osteophytes.
- The other two subjects were older steeplechaser horses that showed lameness due to degenerative joint disease.
Treatment Protocol
- All four horses in the study were treated with intra-articular injections of polysulphated glycosaminoglycans, a type of medication used to combat inflammation and promote joint health.
- The horses received either three or four injections as part of the treatment protocol.
Results
- Following treatment, all four horses showed an improvement in their condition. They became clinically sound, indicating the absence or reduction of lameness symptoms.
- The horses were able to continue racing after the treatment. However, the success rate in their performance differed, indicating the potential effect of other factors, such as their age, type of injuries, their severity, or possibly the progression of joint disease in the older horses.
The study hence, insinuates the potential of polysulphated glycosaminoglycan injections as a treatment option for equine lameness due to different causes, and calls for further research to understand the varying success rates and adapt the treatment protocol accordingly.
